The main goals of the project Nieuwe Bedrijvigheid (New Business) are to identify and support innovative high-potential companies in their initial phases in various regions in The Netherlands. Nieuwe Bedrijvigheid recently celebrated its 20th anniversary: during this period it successfully supported around 1500 start-ups. These incumbent innovative companies potentially mean a strong incentive for the labour market and economic development.

Nieuwe Bedrijvigheid is currently active in five regions, namely Amsterdam, Haaglanden-Rijnland, Gelderland, Rotterdam and Utrecht. The operations in the respective regions are each legally embedded in a trust. Additional to the professional support mentioned above, the project provides access to an extensive network encompassing government institutions and the private sector. This guarantees a considerable increase of the chances of success for the starting entrepreneur. On top of that, the regional trusts, working together as an alliance, offer a national network.

Criteria
The criteria mentioned below are the most important for a successful application.

  • the product, idea or service must be innovative (i.e. technically or industrially innovating);
  • the applying company must be in an early stage of its existence;
  • the applying company must operate in one of the following sectors: ICT, industry, life sciences, biotech, trade or professional services;
  • the business planning shows that the company is commercially viable;
  • the entrepreneur has proven to be successful;
  • the applying company aims for growth and the creation of jobs.

The final decision to grant an applicant the requested support remains at the discretion of the individual boards of the relevant regional trust.

Support
The professional services offered by Nieuwe Bedrijvigheid to the applicant include:

  • market research
  • feasibility studies
  • review of financial plans
  • matching of applicants with potential financiers
  • marketing and PR issues
  • HR management
  • (re)location issues
  • process and internal control design and implementation
  • organisational development
  • extension of the business network

Costs
Starting companies, once admitted to the project, receive a contribution from the regional trusts related to the costs of the professional services provided as well as beneficial payment terms. The aim of these conditions is easily accessible professional management support for starting companies to which these services can mean a leap forwards on their route to maturity.

Nieuwe Bedrijvigheid is possible thanks to the financial contributions of participating members, usually professional companies too. These contributions allow the regional trusts to offer management support at favourable conditions: 2/3 of the fees involved are taken up by the respective trusts, 1/3 of the amount is invoiced to the company receiving the professional services.

Mind you: there may be small differences between the regions with regards to the above mentioned conditions.
